type='text'>Oh Boy, It's The Holiday Season

Yes, it's the day after Christmas and I'm feeling relieved. As much as I look forward to the holiday season, I probably look forward to it ending more. I can't really tell you when this transition started, but it's been here for awhile. Personally, I think we put too much pressure on ourselves during this time of year. Coming up with the perfect gift idea, spending money we just don't have, acting jolly when we really just don't feel very jolly. This morning, the first thing I did when I got up was begin to strip my home of all the vestiges of the holiday season. Took down the lights, stripped the tree, put away the holiday village taking up space on my dining room table and I felt free, albeit somewhat empty. My next task is to make it through the day not partaking in the leftovers sitting quietly in my fridge just waiting for me break down. It'll be tough, but I think I can do it...maybe. If not, I'll just add extra time to my exercise regime, right? I play these games with myself quite often! I guess it's my way of justifying whatever I decide to do or at least try and make myself feel less guilty. It doesn't always work, but I like to be prepared just in case of emergency.

CHANGE IS TOUGH, BUT NECESSARY

I recently made a significant change in my life. I made the decision to seek new employment after my current employment just wasn't allowing me the opportunities I'm looking for, especially at this point in my life. Probably one of the toughest decisions to make, as well as the most stressful, I decided some weeks ago that if change needed to occur, I was the only one who could make it happen. Not an easy decision by any stretch of the imagination. I hate starting new jobs. The whole orientation process, getting to know your co-workers, feeling half way competent, and so forth. For the most part, I think it takes a good year before I really start feeling comfortable in a job and I had clocked in almost ten months at my previous job before deciding to leave.

I've always been of the belief I'm the only one who can make changes in my life, but with that said, it's also very easy to become comfortable in the current situation no matter how uncomfortable. I think most of us shy away from change and are therefore, willing to put up with situations that are less than satisfactory at least for a time. Sometimes, I think the idea of change is more stressful than the process of change itself. For me, the process of change began long before I actually made the decision to take action. Everyday I would prepare myself for another long, tedious day in hopes something would change, but it never did. Co-workers around me complained about their experiences, but never took action to change their circumstances. I even found myself in that same dysfunctional interaction amongst my peers, complaining, but never working towards a solution. It wasn't until I woke up one morning and realized I was as much a part of the problem as I was a part of the solution. And, it was that same day, I began looking for change rather than shying away from it.

I've completed my first week on the new job. I feel comfortable in my new circumstances, albeit a tad bit on shakey ground. It will take some time to realize my full potential in my new circumstances, but I'm open to the possibilities I've opened myself up to.

Inner Beauty Tip of the Day-Mirror Mantras

I realize this may sound a little crazy, but I think that it's a really great way of starting the day off on the right foot. A mirror mantra is simply a way of encouraging and reminding yourself of what a good person you are, especially if there is something you're struggling with. Basically, while you're brushing your teeth or putting on your make-up, repeat a positive statement to yourself. "I am beautiful." "I am kind." "I am giving." It does take some practice, but it really does work. Give it a try!

Inner Beauty Tip of the Day-Give to Others

I realize that most of my tips are related to outward beauty, but I'd really like to focus this particular tip on giving to others. I really don't think there's anything more beautiful than reaching out and showing others some love. In order to present outward beauty, I really do believe that it needs to start from within. If you are truly comfortable in your own skin and love who you are, giving to others will come naturally and only enhance who you truly are from the inside out.

Beauty Tip of the Day-Stop Stressing Out!

Yes, I realize that this is a lot easier said than done, but very critical to not only mental well-being, but physical health as well. Sweating actually releases toxins and disease from our bodies. Many viruses and bacteria can't live in temperatures above 98.6 degrees, so in many cases, sweat burns away illness.

Two ways to get your sweat on are through saunas and exercise. The newest infrared saunas stimulate the body at a cellular level so toxins deep in tissue can be eliminated. These saunas are also able to heat the body while keeping the air cool, resulting in a more pleasant experience. Exercise is the other obvious choice for producing sweat and sweating helps keep skin soft and clear pores.

Amazing High-End Deals for FREE

I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for a really great deal especially when it comes to skin care and cosmetics. Because it's all about establishing a routine and this takes time, it's important to honestly assess what your weaknesses are (everyone as them) and compensate for them. Example: Several of my friends keep saying that they want to start working out, but either they can't find the time or they need motivation. I think we've either all heard this before or have said these same exact words. My response? Unless you work 24/7, there is always time to exercise even if it's for 30 minutes and if motivation is the problem, partner up with someone. This can be a really great way to keep on another going, establishes some "healthy competition," and helps reduce the dull drums. Therefore, whatever your workout weaknesses are, there are always options!

Beauty Tip of the Day-Cover That Gray

This goes without saying, but aside from a dingy smile, nothing else can age a person beyond their years more than gray tresses. Believe me, I speak from personal experience on this one because I started getting gray hair here and there in my late twenties. You see, my father pretty much had a full head of gray hair by the age of 30, therefore, I knew it was inevitable that it would happen to me. Thankfully, my hair didn't go gray quite so drastically, but just enough to annoy the heck out of me and run to the nearest drug store for a box of color! There is absolutely no reason why we must let the ravages of time take over, especially when it can be taken care of so easily and inexpensively. Therefore, keep that gray at bay by taking a few steps each and every other month and you'll be surprised at how much younger you look and feel:).

Back in the Game

I haven't worked outside the home in over two years. I've appreciated the time I've been able to spend with my kids at home, but now it's time to return to the "rat race." Oh, I know it's not as bad as all that, but it just feels like it. Today, I found out that I was offered a job working 30 hours a week. As pleased as I am with the news, I am just as anxious about the new adventure in my life. By no means easy, being a SAHM was nonetheless comfortable and I felt good about staying home with my kids, especially being there when they came home from school every day. With that said, the time comes when changes have to be made and going back to work is one of them. Looking on the bright side of things, I'll actually be able to utilize my closet full of work clothes that I haven't needed in quite some time and I'll be earning a paycheck again!

Beauty Tip of the Day-Brighten Your Smile

Nothing can ruin someone's appearance more than a dingy smile, as well as adding on the years. Anxiety because, as I mentioned in a previous post, I have struggled with money management most of my adult life. To me, payday has always signified the day that I can go out and blow it all away on non-essentials, but no more. Today, payday signified a sense of empowerment and a choice to make more effective decisions/choices for me and my family. For the first time in a very long time, my husband and I actually sat down together, reviewed what bills needed paying and accomplished the task together. It felt really good to have this level of communication with my husband because it had been far too long.

Unfortunately, I think that money mismanagement plays a much bigger role in our lives than we would like to admit. The inability or unwilligness to manage money properly and responsibly, causes many, many problems including, but not limited to depression, anxiety, anger, resentment, and fear. One of the most difficult things to do is actually let go and admit that there is a problem. Once the hurdle of acknowledging that a problem exists, the next steps don't seem to be as uncomfortable or foreboding, but it still involves a lot of work. Personally, I realize that I will always need to acknowledge that I have a problem and continue to take steps accordingly. There is definitely no quick fix to this or any other problem or problems we may encounter in our lifetimes, but there is an opportunity to improve ourselves by the choices we make each and every day.

Beauty Tip of the Day-Take Care of Your Hands

Have you ever noticed that it's the hands that can age a person the quickest? So much time and energy is focused on protecting our faces and body from harmful sun exposure that we tend to forget that our hands need just as much protection, if not more. The skin on the top of our hands is very delicate and needs special attention to keep them looking young and feeling good. Also, as we age, the delicate skin on the top of our hands becomes more sensitive, brown spots begin to appear due to increased Melanin, wrinkles become more apparent and dryness is more common. As a result, it's important to not only take notice, but take action by choosing an effective hand moisturizer with a strong SPF. Finally, with a few easy steps every day, we can continue to keep our hands looking and feeling their best!

Spending Time With My Girlfriends

I really enjoy spending time with my girlfriends. It's my time to re-connect with other women, gossip, discuss our kids and partners, and hear about my single girlfriends adventures and escapades. As with most women who juggle work, children and taking care of the home, I very seldom take time for myself and when I do, I appreciate it all the more. And, although it does take some effort, my friends and I have worked hard at maintaining a monthly "girls night out," no excuses! It's a way for all of us to stay connected and enjoy some time away from the responsibilities of life. Last month, it was dinner with great conversation and a lot of laughter and this month it was one of our friend's hosting a candle party. Whatever the event, it has always just been about girls being girls!

Prior to becoming a mom, I can remember making the promise to myself that I wasn't going to let the role define me. Growing up, I could remember what it did to my mother and it really frightened me. Her role as wife and mother defined who she was to the point that I don't remember a time when she did socialize with others or even really had any friends, for that matter. Her children became her friends and to this day, my mother doesn't really have any friends outside of the family. As a result, I always knew I might fall into the same rut unless I took active steps to stop it. Finally, it's never been about giving less to my family, rather it's always been about giving more to myself so that I can give more to my family.

Beauty Tip of the Day-Use a Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 or Better

I consider this to be one of the essential parts of every woman's morning beauty routine. Not only does a water-based daily moisture aid in prepping the skin for better application of cosmetics, but it can also plays a significant role in sun protection as long as it includes an SPF15 or better. In addition, an effective moisturizer aids in the reduction of dry skin, masks imperfections, and improve skin tone and texture. Finally, not all daily moisturizers are the same, just as not all skin types are the same. Therefore, before purchasing a moisturizer that's right for you, it's important to determine what kind of skin type you have and this will help ensure that you choose the most effective product! Personally, because I have combination skin, I've found that Aveeno's Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 works really well for me and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. At about $14.99 at a local Target store, it gives me all the benefits of a great moisturizer without experiencing buyer's remorse.

Jump'in for Java

Java or coffee has been a part of my adult life for a good 15 years and I've loved every single minute of it. Oh sure, there have been times when I've tried to quit, but never with any success or true desire, if truth be told. No, I'm a coffee-addict through and through. Not only am I a coffee-addict, I'm a coffee-addict of the worst kind, the kind that pays someone else to make it. Every morning, I leave my front door with anticipation of a child on Christmas morning. Because, as I shut the door behind me, I know that within only minutes, I will be cherishing a cup of java. A cup of java that will cost me triple or even quadruple of what it might cost if I made it myself. But isn't that a part of it? It always seems to taste better when I've ordered from the local coffee house or espresso stand, as well as the sheer convenience of enjoying such a delectable treat. The idea that if only for a moment, I am being pampered during a rather ordinary, routinely predictable day. Therefore, in closing, I will continue to embrace of my love of java if only for the momentary escape it allows me.

Beauty Tip of the Day-Drink Water

I know, I know we've heard it all before, but it's really true. Drinking water is an extremely important part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Studies have shown that drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water every day helps to increase energy levels, eat less, lose weight, and keep our skin hydrated to prevent dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. To further aid in your water consumption, try flavoring your water with a lemon or a sugar-free drink mix, such as Crystal Light, replace a can of soda with a glass of water, carry a water bottle around with you as a reminder, suck on ice cubes and eat more fruits and veggies with a high water content, such as tomatoes and watermelons.

For The Love of Strawberries

I am excited to say that strawberry season is finally here after months of waiting!!! Not only are strawberries my most favorite fruit, but so many different things can be done with them. I can't even wait until we get home, before I'm dipping my fingers in and pulling out a sweet, unwashed berry. I'm more than willing to risk a bug or two, not to mention the sprays they use. Okay, well enough of that. Anyway, locally, we have a farm that sells freshly picked strawberries right off the vine and lines begin forming before the place even opens. Unfortunately, these strawberries aren't my best kept secret, but who cares? They are my guilt-free addiction for as long as they're in season, which is never long enough! Aside from the taste, strawberries are one of the healthiest fruits out there which makes me love them all the more. Finally, I typically add them to granola, yogurt, cereal, cool whip (low fat), and an occasional dip in melted chocolate, but they're always best by themselves:).

Some of the major benefits of strawberries are:

anti-oxidant

high in fiber

potassium

folate

omega 3 fatty acids

vitamens B5, B6 and vitamen K

low in calories

Beauty Tip of the Day-Foods For Looks And Health

Apple Cider Vinegar: Besides having amazing healing properties, apple cider vinegar keeps skin supple. If you have a round face and want to give the middle part a whirl, ask your stylist for chin-length layers, which will create a slimming effect by falling across your cheeks.

Polly Blitzer

instyle.com

WARNING!!! Therefore, I've done a little research and found some programs that most communities offer free or very inexpensively!

First of all, the library usually offers programs for preschoolers all the way up to teens. You can enroll in a summer reading program that rewards kids for reading books. Also, many libraries have weekly storytelling sessions that include arts and crafts. Public libraries also offer classes for kids on things like babysitting, pet care, and learning special skills. Our library has weekly activities for kids as well like bingo, scavenger hunts, and puppet shows.

Next, check out some movie theater discounts. National Amusements offers a wonderful program called "Bookworm Wednesdays" throughout the summer. This program encourages young children to read by offering a free movie on Wednesdays for those kids who read a book and write a short book report about the book. Bookworm Wednesdays entitles kids to free admission to a specific children's film every Wednesday from June 27th to August 15th at 10:00 a.m. All they need to do is present the Official Bookworm Entry containing their book summary at participating Showcase/Multiplex Cinemas or Cinema de Lux box offices. Children under six who accompany a participant are not required to do a book report. Adults who accompany a participant receive free admission to the Bookworm Wednesday movie. To learn more about Bookworm Wednesdays, visit the National Amusement website.

Another great place to look for great summer activities is your local Parks and Recreation Department. Many sponsor free programs for children of all ages and families. For example, you can register for scheduled activities, art projects, nature hikes, environmental education and other various park happenings. For a nominal fee, you could also sign your kids up for youth athletics and other age-specific activities.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs provide fun and engaging ways for kids to learn about the
Bible during the summer. Typically about a week long, kids attend either a morning or evening VBS, depending on the church. Not only do children have the opportunity to learn about the Bible and meet new friends, they also get to play games, participate in fun activities and make crafts. Always free for kids, it's also common for Vacation Bible Schools to have a theme each year. Activities, crafts and scripture lessons taught throughout the week all center on the chosen theme. My kids have attended as three different Vacation Bible Schools at different churches during the summer. They love it and always learn new things.

A Fabulous Find

For those of us who love shoes, I found the most amazing site. Created by Kim Kardashian, ShoeDazzle.com offers customers an opportunity to have their shoes hand-picked for them by a stylist for $39/month.

To get started, the site runs the customer through a fashion survey. Based upon the results of this survey, a stylist will choose several pairs of shoes for the customer. The customer will then choose which pair they prefer and the shoes will then be sent to them. Also, there is no obligation to choose a pair of shoes every month, as there is an option to skip a month and the customer will not be charged the $39 monthly fee.

Personally, I jumped at the chance of giving this a go! I've filled out my survey and was told that it will take a couple of days for the stylists to review my survey and choose shoes accordingly. Once completed, I will be contacted via e-mail and will not be charged the monthly fee until I have chosen my pair of shoes. This appears to be a play on the whole BagBorroworSteal idea, but instead of being charged a different price for each bag that the customer chooses, the customer is charged the same rate each and every month.

It's Never Too Late

My husband recently went into the doctor's for a full physical. It had been quite some time since he had last seen a doctor and felt like it was time. A few days later, he got a call from the doctor's office telling him that he had very high cholesterol. Shocked, he put down the phone and asked me how this could have happened?

Looking back, my husband has always been one of those people that had to work at gaining weight. At 6'4", he was lucky to wear a 32" waist without having to cinch a belt to the very last hole, ate anything and everything and never exercised a day in his life. Of course, this was all before the age of 40. Once he reached the big 40, everything started to change and the years of neglect finally started to catch up. It didn't help that his family has a history of high cholesterol or that his dad suffered a stroke at the age of 55.

As a result, my husband was put on medication to help control his cholesterol level, but, in addition, the doctor was quick to point out that he couldn't rely on medication alone. For the first time in his life, my husband was going to actually have to watch his diet and make exercise more of a priority. Definitely, easier said than done. To date, my husband is conscientiously taking his medication and getting some exercise in, but his diet continues to be his downfall.

Uncontrollable risk factors for high cholesterol:

Gender: After menopause, a woman's LDL-cholesterol level ("bad" cholesterol) goes up, as does her risk for heart disease'
Age: Your risk increases as you get older. Men aged 45 years or older and women aged 55 years or older are at increased risk of high cholesterol.
Family History: Your risk increases if a father or brother was affected by early heart disease (before age 55) or a mother or sister was affected by early heart disease (before age 65).

Controllable Factors For Reducing High Cholesterol

Diet: The saturated fat and cholesterol in the food you eat raise total and LDL-cholesterol levels.

Weight: Being overweight can make your LDL-cholesterol level go up and your HDL level go down.

Physical activity/exercise: Increased physical activity helps to lower LDL- cholesterol and raise HDL-cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) levels. It also helps you lose weight.

Walk'in The Dog

I try to get my dog, Missy out at least once a day for a nice long walk. Today it was for about 60 minutes and both she and I got a nice workout in. Missy is about one and a half and is a nice mixture of German Shepard and Rottweiler. I would definitely like to be more consistent with our walks, but I don't always have the motivation. Obviously, it helps that the weather is shaping up and I know that she appreciates me all the more when I do take the time.

I find that taking my dog out on walks is a great variance from the same old, same old and she keeps my pace fairly brisk considering she walks me half the time. Also, I just think that being outside is a natural mood elevator for the both of us! Because she is a bigger dog, I am very aware that she needs more physical activity than a smaller breed. I've seen the evidence left behind when she doesn't get her exercise in, i.e. torn pillows, chewed up shoes, inconsistent behavior, etc. and I have to take my fair share of the responsibility, considering she relies on me for physical exercise.

Another thought that just came to mind is the relevance between me and my dog. Physical activity is a very important component for everyone. It keeps us healthy, strong and positive. I can't imagine not having some sort of physical fitness in my life and I really believe that dogs are the same way. I see the way she behaves when she has both had her exercise and hasn't and I'm exactly the same way. Also, I think it makes it more enjoyable when you having a willing partner beside you every day!

Fight Wrinkles With This Breathing Exercise

Take a deep breath. By increasing the production of cortisol -- a stress hormone that also stymies collagen production, one of the natural substances skin needs in order to plump itself, repair itself, and keep wrinkles at bay.

3 More Feel-Better, Look-Better Tips

Don’t skimp on sleep. And it also releases pent up energy and increases blood flow -- all of which your skin will love.

RealAge Benefit: Having a backup stress-reduction technique on hand when you can’t otherwise destress can make your RealAge 6 years younger.

Ideas On Keeping Fitness A Priority

Throughout the years, I've played with many different ways of keeping fitness a priority in my life. It isn't always easy warding off the inevitable boredom that comes from repetition or just not finding the time or energy to get it done. Therefore, over time I've come up with some creative ways of fighting the dull drums and setting aside the time.

First, in reference to fighting the dull drums, I've collected a nice little collection of workout DVD's that range from step aerobic to cardio kickboxing exercises. By having this collection at my fingertips, it has allowed me to vary my workouts in a much easier manner. Also, in addition to the many different workout options I have, I also prefer to choose several different instructors rather than just one or two. Each instructor adds their own flavor to a workout and there is of a chance of getting stuck in a rut. Some of my favorite instructors are:

1) Amy Bento. Known for high energy workouts, Amy has DVD's ranging from weight training with kettleballs to Bosu ball workouts. Products can be found at nrgfitness.net

2) Jari Love. This is another instructor that I really like. Primarily weight training, these DVD's are for the advanced-level exerciser. DVD's and info. can be found at jarilove.com

3) Kathy Smith (Old-School). I really enjoy her older stuff. When I was pregnant with my second child, I used her aerobics for pregnancy DVD and it was really effective.

4) Karen Voight. This is one instructor that seems to only get better with age. Her workouts are intense and vary nicely. Also, she's really good about explaining proper form and technique. Some of my favorites are Energy Sprint, Ultimate Step Circuit, Great Weighted Workout, and YogaSculpt. Most of her DVD's can be found at collagevideo.com

5) Billy Blanks. I haven't really used his new stuff, but I do like some of his older kickboxing workouts. They work up a really good sweat and are alot of fun.

6) The Firm (Old-School). This series of DVD's is actually how I started actively integrating weights into my workouts, although I'm not overly familiar with their new stuff. I prefer the older DVD's that can still be found on collagevideo.com

7) P90X Workout Series. This is a workout series that you pretty much do by itself and has a schedule included. This workout is based on the concept of "muscle confusion," in which the muscles are constantly being trained in different ways so as not to get bored or cause your body to plateau. I went through the entire 90 day schedule and was pleased with the results, but I prefer to go on my schedule with the workouts and integrate them into other workouts.

Second, in terms of finding the time or having the energy to keep fitness a priority, I have found that much of it is mental. Making the decision to workout a certain amount of days each week ought to be viewed as any other priority. For some, working out in the mornings is the way to go, but for others, evenings are the best time. It's really about finding a schedule that works for you and sticking to it. Your body will adapt, although it may take some time. Once you have found a schedule that works for you, you will find that your energy levels increase, but stick with it!

Relive Your Youth: Try Jumping Rope

Physical activity has always played a large part in my life. When we were kids, my mother always had us doing some kind of physical activity whether that be walking, swimming, or riding bikes. As I grew into adulthood, I came to appreciate the fact that I was introduced to exercise at such a young age and found it easy to incorporate it into my adult life.

Recently, I've re-introduced myself to the art of jumping rope. I term the activity as an art because it really does take a certain tenacity and mindset to make it through a workout such as this. Probably one of my favorite activities growing up, it takes on a whole new meaning for me as an adult. Comparatively one of the most difficult workouts, jumping rope has definitely taken me to a whole new level of respect for those who can actually complete a workout without passing out! Although on a serious note, it really is great way to fit in a fantastic cardio workout in a relatively short period of time. According to fitfaq.com, jumping rope can burn up to 1000 calories per hour, making it one of the most efficient workouts possible. It tones muscles in the entire body, developing long, lean muscles in all major muscle groups, both upper and lower. Jumping rope optimizes cardiovascular conditioning and maximizes athletic skills by combining agility, coordination, timing, and endurance.

In addition to the above benefits mentioned, jumping rope is relatively inexpensive as the price of most ropes run between $10-$25, it's completely portable, fun, and relatively easy to learn. Now, I say relatively easy to learn because the basic jump is something most of can do, but it's really learning how to control the rope through the wrists. This sounds easy enough, but it does take practice through repetition and keeping frustration levels to a minimum, as the rope will initially get it caught up in your feet more often than you can count.

Currently, I am using the Aero Jump/Sculpt DVD created by Michael Olajide Jr., a former professional boxer, but for those who would like to begin with something a little less high impact, there are some great workouts found by googling jumping rope exercises or workouts. Also, it is suggested that to become proficient, individuals ought to commit to at least two days a week to it.

Looking Good Is Feeling Good

I have always been of the belief that looking good is feeling good. Now, I'm not saying that looking good is the cure all, but I am saying that it really does make a big difference and it can actually trick your brain into a better mood! Personally, my guilty pleasure is jewelry. Whether it's a statement necklace, chandelier earrings or an irresistable bracelet, I wear at least one piece of jewelry every day and it really does help me feel better.

Admittedly, when I did make the important decision to give up control of my finances, I also made the decision to drastically curtail my spending habits. But, with that said, that didn't mean that my love of jewelry and wearing it ended, it simply meant that I needed to be more creative and open-minded about my options.

As a result, I actively began shopping my jewelry box. I first heard of this concept on the Today Show when a stylist being interviewed mentioned women shopping their closests, especially during difficult financial times. At first, I chuckled at the idea, but the more I got to think about it, the more it made sense and I gave it a try.

The concept of shopping what you already have is an interesting one, but it can also lead to some really fun, out-of-the-box ideas. I highly suggest taking some time for yourself and carefully re-introducing yourself to items that you already own, but maybe haven't given much attention to lately or trying new ways of wearing them. For me, it was really fun to go through all of my pieces of jewelry and pair them with those items I would have never considered before. For example, this last Christmas my husband purchased for me a vintage-style bracelet with matching earrings. For a time, I felt almost compelled to wear the two items of jewelry together, probably because they were given to me as a set and sometimes I think we adhere to "unwritten rules" or whatever else it is, but there are no rules and that's what makes it so much fun. Once I got over the whole "matchy" thing, I realized I have more opportunities to make old things new again without spending a dime.

What makes you feel good?

Giving Up Control

The past couple of days have been a struggle. I didn't get a job that I had interviewed for and I gave up control of my family's finances to my husband. There will always be other jobs, although I have to admit I was disappointed, but the whole money thing has me in a little bit of a tailspin.

Money has always played a large part in my life or what it signified. My parents used "things" to control and their arguments were always centered around money or the lack thereof. You see, in the twenty-something years my parents were married, my mother always controlled the purse strings, in that she paid the bills (or not), purchased the groceries and never failed to spend every last dime. This was her addiction. An addiction that came to control every facet of her life, although I wasn't necessarily aware of it at the time because I was still just a kid and I greatly benefited from it. I came to learn that having money and spending it haphazardly was "normal" and it was all about instant gratification.

Needless to say, as an adult, I have always struggled with money. I've never had a problem earning it, just holding onto it. This inability to control myself has caused many, many a problem in my life and that of my family. Looking back, I became quite creative at finding ways to spend money even if it wasn't mine. I can't even remember how many times I used my friends and other family members credit to finance my addiction and still I didn't "get it." I continued to bask in the glory of purchasing whatever I pleased, no matter the cost or potential consequences.

My husband has always been my biggest advocate when it came to my problems with money. Every time I did do something positive, such as pay bills on time and not spend it all on this or that, he was the first to cheer for me. Unfortunately, this never lasted very long and I would go back to my old ways.

Everyone's "bottom" is different and happens at different points in life. My "bottom" came three weeks ago when my car was repossessed because I hadn't been making my payments and I lost my part-time job. Wow, if that's not a wake up call, I don't know what is, but I've had many circumstances similar to this. Why now? Well, I think it really hit home because I saw how dramatically it affected my husband and yes, how embarrassing it was to explain away a missing vehicle to those asking.

As a result, I did the one thing that I should have done many years ago, I gave up control and allowed someone else to take over. This has probably been the most frightening and empowering thing that I've ever done, but I'm committed to it. I committed to it for myself, my family, and most importantly, our future.

Tip of the Day: Smile

Yes, it's as easy as that. A simple smile is really all you need to get your day started off on the right foot. Don't believe me? Just give it a try and you'll be surprised at how much better it can make you feel! Studies have shown that you can actually fool yourself into a better mood by smiling more often. Also, it's really good for you, as it reduces stress and is an instant face-lift and who wouldn't like alittle work done?!!

6 Ways to Ease a Food Addiction

How to break free from the power food has over you
By Daryn Eller , Daryn Eller is a freelance writer in Venice, CA.

Don't let the word addiction scare you: Experts agree that food addiction is not nearly as strong as alcohol and drug addictions. While it might not feel like it at times, you have the power to control what you eat.

Here are six ways you can loosen the stranglehold a food addiction may have on you.

Smaller plates = smaller portions.
People with food addiction often overeat because the signals that traditionally tell the body to stop eating don't sound off. But according to Mark Gold, MD, chief of addiction medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine, you can actually retrain your brain to feel full on less food. Begin by using smaller plates and bowls, which will force you to dish out smaller portions.

Over time (it may take a few weeks), your brain will begin to get used to the reduced portion sizes and you'll feel less compelled to keep eating. Once you've mastered that, try reducing your portions even further by leaving a little space on your plate; again, your brain will slowly but surely adapt.

Lower the "sweet" volume.

If sugar is your weakness, start by removing it from areas of your diet where you're less likely to notice. Target sauces, dressings, breads, crackers, and other "nonsweet" foods that contain hidden sweeteners (look not only for sugar but high fructose syrup and corn syrup on ingredient lists). After a while, your taste buds will become more sensitive to sugar, making the foods you really want to avoid--cookies, cakes, candy--a little less appealing.

Keep your hunger in check.

People with food addiction often get tripped up by resisting food to the point of being ravenous, then overeating as a result. Rate your hunger on a scale of zero to ten, zero being starving and ten being overstuffed, then try to stay somewhere in the middle.

Work it out by working out.

Exercise can actually change the body's biochemistry, helping to make up for some of the physiological imbalances that can lead to food addiction. Also, time spent working out is time that you won't be eating.

Find other ways of coping.

Just as some addicts turn to drugs and/or alcohol to help them deal with pain and anxiety, food addicts turn to food. Instead of running away from those feelings, consider talking to a therapist or finding support from a food addiction group like Overeaters Anonymous.

Don't return to the scene of the crime.

Drug addicts get into trouble when they go back into the neighborhood where they used to buy drugs. Similarly, returning to the same patterns can trip you up. So shake up your routine. If tortilla chips are your weakness, don't go to Mexican restaurants. If the sight of a certain donut shop weakens your resolve, walk another route. If you always have ice cream while watching TV at night, read a book instead (or knit as you watch the tube so your hands will be occupied).

10 Ways to Look Younger on the Cheap

1. Pump Up Hair's Volume

Switch to mousse It costs the same as other styling products, but because it contains resins that lightly coat strands to add thickness and lift hair at the root, mousse delivers far more oomph, says Renee Cohen, senior stylist at Serge Normant at the John Frieda Salon in New York City.

Dry hair upside down To build volume when you blow-dry, work a palm full of mousse from your roots through to the ends, then flip your head over and dry your hair away from the scalp. "Hair should be barely damp before you flip it back up and style it," she says.

Brush in fullness Using a round brush to style hair builds in more volume. Pick a medium-size brush (for longer hair) or small (for shorter)--the full circle of bristles will give roots a lift as you blow-dry, brushing in the opposite direction the hair is going to lay. Hook the brush under a 2-inch section of hair at the root, and lift as you roll it through to the ends--all the while following the brush with the dryer. Keep the nozzle above your brush and pointed down to increase shine.

2. Restore Your Locks' Luster

Give yourself a weekly hot-oil treatment
Save a bundle by substituting jojoba oil (find it in natural food stores for about $10) for pricier hair-repair products. "Jojoba has a fine molecular structure that allows it to enter and fill the hair shaft, making it a perfect choice for conditioning," says Paul Labrecque, owner of the New York City-based Paul Labrecque Salon. Spread the oil liberally through dry hair, put on a plastic shower cap, then cover with a hot towel for 30 minutes. Wash it out thoroughly, then rinse with cold water to seal the cuticle and trap added moisture. "When the hair shaft is infused with oil, the cuticle lies flatter, so your hair looks smoother and shinier," he explains.

2. Keep a cool head

Heat opens hair's protective outer layer, damaging strands and creating frizz. "Frequently cooling the hair while styling helps keep your cuticle flat," says Labrecque. If your dryer has a cool-shot button, use it to deliver a blast of cold air after drying each individual section. (This also helps lock in your new style.) If it doesn't, he suggests holding your style in place with your brush for about 30 seconds to let hair cool off.

3. Get milk

Soak a clean washcloth in cold milk and place it over your face for 10 minutes. "Milk contains proteins, fat, amino acids, and vitamin A--all of which reduce redness and calm irritated skin," says David Bank, MD, a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, NY. Bonus: The lactic acid in milk exfoliates, so skin looks soft and glowing.

4. Banish Brown Spots

Camouflage with care
First, dab concealer that's one or two shades lighter than your foundation onto the spot. Use a concealer brush--it'll give more precise coverage than your finger. Follow with a dot of foundation that exactly matches your skin tone. "The concealer lightens the spot, and the foundation helps blend it seamlessly," says New York City-based makeup artist Jessica Liebeskind.

5. Get a Healthy Glow

Replace your makeup wisely
"Switching from powder formulas to creamier ones gives your skin a soft reflective sheen," says Kimara Ahnert, a makeup artist in New York City. Cheeks tend to be drier than your T-zone, so as soon as you use up your powder blush, buy a light liquid or cream formula that imparts a youthful glow instead of leaving skin dull and matte.

6. Plump Thin Lips

Think pink
"Dark or bright colors call attention to the size of your lips, emphasizing thinness and fine lines around your mouth," says Liebeskind. Instead, choose a lipstick that mimics the color of your lips when you were younger.

Define your lips
After applying lipstick, line just at the outer edge of the natural border of your mouth with a pencil in a shade that exactly matches your lipstick. Don't try to draw on a bigger pout--it'll only look fake.

7. Brighten Your Smile

Mix your own whitener
Brushing with a paste made of baking soda and water a few times a month removes superficial staining and whitens teeth by a shade or two. "The graininess neutralizes stains and polishes teeth but isn't abrasive enough to wear down your enamel," says Jennifer Jablow, DDS, a cosmetic dentist in New York City.

Keep teeth whiter, longer
To sidestep stains when drinking red wine, chase your vino with a handful of crunchy raw vegetables. "They have a brushing action that can rub away newly setting stains," says Jablow.

Choose the right lipstick shade
"Colors with blue undertones make teeth appear brighter," explains Liebeskind. To figure out which of your lipsticks fit the bill, she recommends lining up three or four shades--in comparison to each other, it will be more obvious which are blue-based and which have yellow or gold undertones that bring out the yellow in teeth.

8. Minimize Undereye Circles

Be generous with your concealer
"The biggest mistake women make is using too little concealer," says Liebeskind. Start by putting on eye cream--concealer can settle into fine lines of all skin types, especially drier complexions. Then apply a generous layer of concealer from the inner corner of the eye around to the outer corner with a concealer brush. Pat and press the product into the skin to blend. If there's still any darkness visible, apply a second layer of concealer. Set the concealer with a dusting of face powder that matches your foundation.

Caffeinate your eyes
Tea bags can perk up tired-looking eyes. "The caffeine helps shrink the underlying dark blood vessels and forces out some of the liquid that creates puffiness," explains Ava Shamban, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. Soak tea bags in hot water for a minute before plunging them into ice water for a few seconds. Lie down and apply them directly to your eyes for 15 minutes.

9. Smooth Imperfections

Keep makeup outside the lines
To be sure there's no excess makeup to settle into--and emphasize--the fine lines around your eyes and mouth, Ahnert suggests using a dry makeup sponge to gently smooth and blend makeup after applying it. Don't wipe, though, or you'll rub it off.

10. Give Eyes a Lift

Curl lashes correctly
When lashes are clean and dry (wet ones won't hold a curl), position the curler at the root of lashes and give three firm, gentle pumps. Release and repeat. "Holding it steady doesn't create a natural-looking, fluid curl," says Liebeskind.

Create a long-lasting curl
Heat your curler with your blow-dryer for 15 seconds first. "The warmth holds the bend better," says NYC-based makeup artist Mally Roncal.

Breakfast: A Meal You Don't Want to Miss

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day is young and you can be, too--if you eat breakfast. Scientific studies show that a good morning meal can help protect your heart and keep you trim.

Let's start by talking about your losing battle--that seemingly never-ending quest to be thin--and how breakfast can make you a winner.

Breakfast appears to act as a wake-up call for your body's metabolism, stimulating it to burn more calories. A study conducted by Wayne Callaway, M.D., associate professor of medicine at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., found that breakfast eaters had metabolic rates 3 to 4 percent above average, while breakfast skippers had sluggish rates, 4 to 5 percent below average. That means that in the course of a year, breakfast skippers will "conserve" 10 to 15 pounds of body fat, explains Dr. Callaway.

Eating breakfast can also help you to control your hunger, and when you do get hungry, to choose the right low-fat foods. A study at Vanderbilt University in Nashville led by David Schlundt, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychology, found that breakfast eaters chose fewer high-fat foods and more healthy high-carbohydrate foods and more successfully fought off their cravings for late-day, unhealthy snacks than did nonbreakfast eaters.

Shifts in brain chemistry throughout the day make us more likely to crave fats as the hour gets later, explains Dr. Callaway. Most of us wake up craving carbohydrates rather than fats. "It's as if we are biologically programmed to eat a healthy breakfast," he says.

A healthy, high-carbohydrate, low-fat breakfast will address more than your midlife battle of the bulge. It can also address another weighty matter--circulatory disease, the national epidemic of clogged arteries that leads to millions of disabling and deadly heart attacks and strokes.

One cause of circulatory disease is blood clots, sticky plugs that block arteries. The clots are formed from platelets, the tiny disk-shaped parts of blood that are responsible for normal clotting (like when you cut yourself) but can go into overdrive and become more like Krazy Glue than Scotch tape.

Researchers at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's looked at the effect of breakfast on platelets. They found that morning levels of the factor that makes platelets sticky were much higher in people who didn't eat breakfast. Scientists already know that most heart attacks and strokes occur in the morning. Does that mean that skipping breakfast can make your heart skip a lot more than a beat?

"It is definitely prudent and important to have breakfast every morning," says George Fodor, M.D., a professor of clinical epidemiology at Memorial University who led the study.

Breakfast might also help your heart by lowering cholesterol. Researchers at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia looked at the breakfast habits of 12,000 people and found that those who ate cereal--any cereal--for breakfast had the lowest cholesterol levels. Guess who had the highest? The folks who didn't eat breakfast.

"We've known that one of the worst things you can do for proper nutrient intake is skip breakfast. But now we have new evidence that people who eat a breakfast including cereal have lower cholesterol," says John Stanton, Ph.D., the study's author and director of the Food, Nutrition and Health Research Institute at St. Joseph's.

Breakfast may also help protect you from developing gallstones, says James E. Everhart, M.D., a researcher with the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. People who skip breakfast are essentially undergoing a short-term fast, and fasting has been shown to increase the risk of gallbladder disease.

Rise and Dine

Okay, you're convinced--eating breakfast can tone your body, inside and out. But maybe breakfast feels like a blind date with Count Chocula. Maybe you just can't get used to the idea of a hearty meal so early in the day. Or maybe you like breakfast--the eggs and bacon variety that turns your arteries into a cholesterol junkyard. Well, here are some easy, healthy ways to say good morning to yourself.

Just do it. You can get your body used to eating a healthy breakfast even if you've never eaten it in your life, says John Foreyt, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Research Clinic at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week even if you have no appetite," he says. Within a week or so it will start to feel like an old habit.

Don't nibble at night. Snacking at night will make you less hungry in the morning, says Robert Klesges, Ph.D., professor of psychology and preventive medicine at Memphis State University. And that, he says, starts a vicious circle: You have no appetite for breakfast, which makes you hungrier in the evening, which makes you snack more at night.

Make cereal a habit. No matter what you eat for breakfast, make part of the meal cereal, says Dr. Stanton. Choose a brand that's low in fat and high in fiber and add some fresh sliced fruit for extra flavor and nutrients.

Eat cakes for breakfast. Pancakes, that is. "Pancakes are high in energy-boosting carbohydrates and low in fat if you make them without a lot of oil," says Dr. Schlundt.

You can make enough for a week and freeze a single layer on a foil-lined tray. Then stack them and wrap them tightly with wax paper or plastic wrap. On a hectic weekday morning, just stick two in a toaster oven; that's all it takes for a great breakfast.

Be a smooth operator. Smoothies are delicious, nutrition-packed breakfast drinks that only take a minute or so to make. Take one cut-up piece of fruit, one cup of nonfat yogurt (any flavor), a quarter-cup of orange juice and a few ice cubes. Whip it all up in a blender and pour it into a glass--or even into your car mug.

Don't bring home the bacon. "Nobody needs to eat meat at breakfast," says Dr. Schlundt. "Eat bread, cereal, juice or fruit, plus skim milk or low-fat yogurt," he suggests. "With these foods, it's really easy to feel full in the morning, and their carbohydrates are a great source of energy."

15 Best Workouts Of All Time

http://www.fitnessmagazine.com1. Tone Up on the Treadmill
"Save time at the gym with this 10-minute cardio/sculpt session: Hop on a treadmill holding a three- to five-pound dumbbell in each hand, and set the speed to a brisk walk. Do a one-minute set each of shoulder presses, biceps curls, triceps extensions, side laterals, front laterals and standing triceps kickbacks one after another as you walk. I's an amazing upper-body challenge that also gets your heart pumping. Do this series two or three times each week. As you improve, work up to doing four-minute sets."
--Michael George, trainer and owner of Integrated Motivational Fitness in Los Angeles

2. Power Up Your Runs"Adding wall sits to the end of every run will strengthen your quads, hamstrings and glutes, improving your speed and endurance. Lean against a wall with your feet shoulder-width apart, then squat until your knees are bent at 45 degrees. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds; work up to doing 10 sets. Add a challenge by including heel raises: Lift your left heel, then the right, then lift both together twice."
--Mindy Solkin, owner and head coach of the Running Center, New York City

3. Chart Your Progress
"Stay motivated using a fitness report card. Jot down these subjects: Cardio, Muscle Conditioning, Flexibility and Attitude. Set goals (for example, doing 10 "boy" push-ups) and grade yourself A through F at least four times a year. When you see how much you improve, you'll want to stay in great shape."
--Ken Alan, Los Angeles--based personal trainer

4. Try This All-in-One Toner
"A side-step squat with wood chop works your arms, torso, abs, back, legs, inner thighs and butt. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart holding a three- to four-pound medicine ball in your hands. Bend your arms up so that the ball is at eye level over your right shoulder. As you bring the ball toward your left knee, step out with your left leg and bend it no further than 90 degrees, keeping your right leg straight. Return to the starting position. Do 10 to 15 reps and repeat on the other leg."
--David Kirsch, trainer and author of The Ultimate New York Body Plan (McGraw-Hill, 2004)

5. Break Out the Shovel
"Why pay someone to clear snow from your driveway? Besides burning nearly 400 calories per hour, shoveling snow develops muscular endurance and power. But be safe: Minimize the amount of snow on each shovelful, and bend from your knees and hips, not your back."
--Tom Seabourne, Ph.D., exercise physiologist and sports psychologist at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas

6. Work Out During Your Workday
"Sit on a stability ball to strengthen your core, and keep dumbbells or exercise tubing at your desk. Squeeze in 12 to 15 reps of exercises like dumbbell curls, overhead presses and ab crunches; aim for two or three sets of each. This gives you more free time to fit in fun workouts like biking or tennis."
--Gregory Florez, personal trainer and CEO of Salt Lake City -- based FitAdvisor.com

7. Take This Jump-Rope Challenge"The best cardio workout is the jump-rope double-turn maneuver. It's intense: You'll burn about 26 calories per minute! Do a basic jump for five minutes, then jump twice as high and turn the rope twice as fast so it passes under your feet twice before you land. This takes timing, patience and power. But you'll get in great shape just by working at it."
--Michael Olajide Jr., former number one world middleweight contender and cofounder/trainer at Aerospace High Performance Center in New York City

8. Give Yourself a Break
"You don't have to be a fitness saint to get results. Follow the 80/20 plan: Eighty percent of the year, you'll exercise regularly and eat well. Know that you'll slip 20 percent of the time due to holidays and work deadlines. When you accept that fitness isn't an all-or-nothing proposition, you're more likely to stick with it for life."
--Maureen Wilson, owner/personal trainer/instructor, Sweat Co. Studios, Vancouver, B.C.

9. Get a Jump on Weight Loss"Add plyometric box jumps to your workout to improve your cardiovascular stamina and leg strength -- you'll really sculpt your hamstrings, quads and glutes. Find a sturdy box that';s at least one foot high [like a Plyo Box, $139.95; 888-556-7464; performbetter.com]. Starting from a standing position, explosively jump to the middle of the box, then jump back down. Repeat 20 times."
--Michael George

10. Don't Skimp on Carbs
"Your body needs them to fuel a workout, so reach for fruit or high-fiber crackers an hour beforehand. If you'e exercising for 90 minutes or longer, include some protein so that the carbs break down more slowly, giving you longer-lasting energy. Your best bets: low-fat cheese and crackers, trail mix or half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich."
--Cindy Sherwin, R.D., personal trainer at the Gym in New York City

11. Maximize Your Crunches
"Don't relax your abs as you lower your chest away from your knees during a crunch -- you get only half the ab-toning benefit! To get the firmest abs possible, you need to sustain the contraction on the way down."
--Steve Ilg, founder of Wholistic Fitness Personal Training and author of Total Body Transformation (Hyperion, 2004)

12. Intensify Your Push-Up"Squat-thrust push-ups get you in great shape because they work your upper body, core and lower body and improve agility, strength and endurance all at once. From a standing position, bend down, put your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart, and jump your feet back into plank position. If you're strong, cross your ankles; otherwise, jump your feet wide apart. Do a push-up, then jump your feet together or uncross your ankles. Jump your feet back to your hands and stand up. Do eight reps total, rest for one minute, and repeat."
--Keli Roberts, Los Angeles -- based trainer

13. Paddle Your Way to Flatter Abs
"Go kayaking to get a taut stomach -- it's ideal because much of your rowing power comes from your core. Mimic the motion and resistance of the water at home by looping an exercise band around the bottom of a table leg or other fixed object. Sit on the floor with legs extended, knees slightly bent; grasp one end of the band in each hand. Rotate your torso to one side as you bring the elbow back slightly, then switch sides. Do three sets of one to three minutes each."
--Barbara Bushman, Ph.D., associate professor of health, physical education and recreation at Southwest Missouri State University

14. Make Over Your Running Routine"Unless you're training for a marathon, skip long, slow, distance running -- sprinting builds more muscle. Add a few 10- to 60-second sprints to your run, slowing down just long enough to catch your breath between them."
--Stephen Holt, 2003 ACE Personal Trainer of the Year

15. Super-Sculpt Your Butt"Get great glutes by targeting the muscles and connective tissues buried deep in your body. To hit them, do high-intensity squats, such as jump squats. Then, blast off butt flab with cross-country skiing, bleacher running and stair climbing."
--Steve Ilg

Nine Tips To Keep Your Skin Looking Younger

Anti-aging skin care is very popular in today’s world. Today most people want to maintain their youthful looks through antiaging skin care procedures (and a number of people are successful too). However, anti-aging skin care is not achieved by any magic potion. Anti-aging skin care is about discipline. It is about being proactive.Although most of the nine tips below are mentioned in other blog posts, it never hurts to continually emphasize some of the most basic steps needed for proactive anti-aging skin care. As you read through the tips below, make a list of two to three items that you can begin implementing today. Once accomplished, add the next two to three items until you have incorporated each tip into your daily routine.

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

1. Maintain healthy eating habits. A well balanced diet is the key to maintaining a proper body metabolism. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables (raw), they are the best source of fiber and have a very refreshing effect on your body. Avoid oily and fatty food; not only do they lack in essential nutrients but also cause obesity and other diseases which accelerate the aging process.

2. Beat stress. This is probably the most important anti-aging skin care measure. Stress disturbs the body’s metabolism and accelerates the aging process. Sleep, exercise and a relaxing bath, are all good ways of beating stress. Aroma-therapy is also known to bust stress.

3. Drink a lot of water: Anti-aging skin care can’t be any simpler than this. Water helps flush out the toxins from the body, hence keeping it clean and making it less prone to disease. Around 8 glasses of water (per day) is recommended by all doctors.

4. Regular exercise is a wonderful anti-aging skin care procedure. Besides toning your muscles, it also helps in cleaning the skin by flushing out the toxins in the form of sweat. Exercise should be followed by a warm shower in order to completely remove the toxins.

5. Avoid the use of strong, chemical based products on your skin. Natural skin care products are a good option. Use of organic skin care products (home made or commercial) can be a very effective anti-aging skin care measure.

6. Do not overuse skin care products. Excessive and harsh application can prove harmful to the skin.

7. Do not ignore skin disorders; it can lead to permanent skin damage. Try over the counter medication and if that doesn’t help, immediately visit your dermatologist and seek his/her advice.

8. Vitamin C based skin care products are a very popular means of anti-aging skin care. However, these seem to oxidize very quickly (which makes them harmful for the skin). So store them properly. If the product turns Yellowish brown, it means that vitamin c has oxidized and the prodct is no longer suitable for use.

9. Protect your skin against UV radiation. UV rays are known to speed up the aging process. So, a good sunscreen lotion should be a part of your anti-aging skin care routine.

By adopting these simple tips, you are well on your way to more youthful looking skin.
